The new year is the perfect time to give your child’s room a makeover. The bedroom may have become worn or dated over time. Or maybe your child’s interests and favorite colors have changed, and they want a little creative freedom. If you can’t shell out large sums to bring in the professionals, there’s a lot you can do yourself.
Here are some of the things you can consider adding.
With just a few tips, re-decorating the room will be a fun project that results in beautiful results.
1. Mini Art Galleries
If your kid is crafty and loves to draw, let them create some of the décor for the room. Create an accent wall featuring only their designs and get them used to the idea of displaying their work. You may have a professional artist on your hands!
You can buy affordable frames for their drawings or paintings or make your own if you’re handy with wood. Depending on the age of your child, the artwork can be more sophisticated. You can also add framed photos of the child or your family.
2. Neon Signs
You may think neon signs are only for restaurants and bars but they can a funky touch to a room. Once you have the overall vision for the room, design the type of sign you want. You’ll want to get something that fits with the rest of the room.
Get a custom-made neon sign which reflects something your child loves and watch their eyes light up. These signs are easy to hang up, and plugin and they are quite energy efficient.
3. DIY-Headboards
If you currently have a basic, plain headboard in your child’s room, you may think it will cost a lot to upgrade it. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. You can create a headboard that your child can use as they grow. You just need fiberboard, fabric, foam, glue and a staple gun. If you can paint, tie-dye or otherwise design your own fabric, you get extra points.
However, it’s perfectly fine to buy fabric both you and your child love. You can go bold or stick with a neutral color, especially if the rest of the room is busy.
4. Wall Decals
Graphics add instant drama to a room. You don’t have to try to paint freehand or use stencils. Instead, get wall stickers or decals. The larger you go, the more impactful it will be. You can design your own decal and get a business to do the printing. You can get fun, colorful designs for a toddler and allow your teenager to choose their own prints.
5. Decorative Message Boards
This is a great idea for older children. Source a piece of cork board and cover it with the fabric of your choice. Add an inexpensive frame. You can leave inspirational messages for your child on the board, or they can use it for reminders or meaningful quotes.
Message boards bring together both beauty and function. If you can’t update the entire room, this small touch can brighten things up.
6. Chalkboard Walls and Fixtures
For a simple yet impactful update, add a wide chalkboard stripe around your child’s room. Chalkboard walls allow them to express their creativity and that inherent desire to draw on the walls. Your carefully painted walls will stay clean while they have fun drawing and writing on the chalkboard.
Older children may want to do an elaborate design and leave it for some time, but younger ones may simply want to scribble and erase. Another option is to make a chalkboard lamp or light shade and add personalized messages to your child.
7. Gray Paint and Furniture
Gray for a child’s room? Yes. This neutral color is the perfect canvas for colorful accents. You can use soft colors like yellow, pink or blue for a modern look. Perhaps most importantly, gray will grow with your child.
Many children reject those brightly-colored “childish” rooms as they get older and this means you would have to repaint. However, gray means you can update the room without having to paint again.
8. Mini Seats
Instead of a bulky ottoman, create a smaller pouf in a bright color or fuzzy texture. It’s visually impactful since it adds life to the room, but it is also functional. The lightweight nature means your child can quickly move it around the room. A pouf can also double as a seat for stuffed toys, dolls or books which your child wants to keep close.
If your child’s room needs an update for 2019, look no further than these tips.
You can adapt them to suit the age and preferences of your child. These ideas are all easy to create yourself, and you can include your child in some of them. They will no doubt enjoy seeing their work on display for years to come.
