Kids love DIY projects. This means that the moment your kid hears you’re redecorating their room, they’ll effectively appoint themselves as your primary assistant.
Even if you can’t allow your little one too much responsibility, there are heaps of fun ways for you to make your child a key stakeholder in what happens to their room. Check out the following tips for involving your kid in their bedroom makeover and get decorating!
1. Choosing a color
One of the most essential elements of a room’s interior is the color of the walls, and kids’ bedrooms are often the brightest, most colorful spaces in the home in this respect. Your little one will adore you for allowing them to help choose the paint that’ll go on their walls!
From taking them to the paint store to making wall swatches, your child can enjoy the whole process with you. You may need to provide some gentle cajoling – bright-red walls, for example, probably aren’t the most durable and calming option – but there are certainly ways to compromise (with a feature wall or ceiling, for example).
If your little one is old enough, you might even encourage them to compile their own mood-board using pictures from home magazines.
2. Shopping around
Go to a home show and peruse the model bedrooms; check out a department store together and get their opinion on bed covers, curtains, blinds, and more. Taking your kid shopping will be a great, fun day for both of you and will also provide you with some clarity on where their ever-changing personality is at that moment so you can design a space appropriate for them.
3. Building it together
Kids are fascinated by flatpack furniture (and if they’re not, just tell them it’s like grown-up LEGO). If you have a burgeoning builder on hand, building a simple bedside table, desk or shelving unit can be a fantastic bonding activity for the two of you, and a productive one to boot.
4. Putting them in charge of accessorizing
Allowing your kids to take the reins when accessorizing is a fantastic way to get them involved in the decorating process.
From choosing and installing temporary wall stickers to picking a nightlight that matches their room and interests, kids adore seeing what they love come together in one place.
5. Sorting storage as a team
Decorating often entails a whole rejuvenation of space – including solving any storage woes. If you’re redecorating, this is a perfect opportunity to get your kid sorting through all the bits they no longer need. Whether toys or clothes, set them up with a recycle vs. store vs. throw away system, and see how much clearer the room looks at the end of the process.
And when it comes to storage solutions, get your little one’s opinion on what they’d prefer.
Would they like a bunk bed with loads of storage underneath, or a regular bed with drawers which pull out under? Floating wall shelves, or a tried-and-true standing bookcase?
6. Doing a fun DIY
Decorating a room opens up the opportunity for dozens of little DIY projects which will keep your crafty little one occupied for weeks on end.
For example, you might buy them a tie-dye kit and guide them through creating cool patterns on pillows or set them up with all the materials to paint a series of pictures that can be focal art pieces of the finished room.
