Need help choosing a crib?
You know you want a white crib for your nursery, but you are uncertain about which is best for you and your baby?
Here’s what you need to consider before purchasing a baby crib.
Difference Between Standard and Convertible Crib
In this list, you’ll notice different types of cribs, and some of them are marked as convertible cribs.
A convertible crib as the ability to transform into a kid’s bed, by lowering the mattress and removing the side railing. This type of crib is very convenient because your baby will outgrow his crib after 1 or 2 years. With a convertible crib, you’ll be able to turn the crib into a toddler’s bed and use the same mattress.
In the convertible department, there are different subcategories, such as the 3-in-1 and the 4-in-1. These names represent the number of bed options you’ll get. Depending on the model, you can turn the crib into a toddler’s bed, a day bed, and a full-size bed. The convertible crib might be more expensive to buy, but they are a great way to save money in the long term.
However, make sure to read the full product description, because not all manufacturers used the same appellation.
Play It Safe and Get a New Crib!
Do you have a crush for a vintage crib in the storefront of your local antique shop? Perhaps it’s a friend or a family member who promise you their old crib?
I recommend you pass on those options, and get a new crib. Because what use to be a safe crib a couple years ago might not meet the current safety standards. Moreover, an old crib could have safety hazards, such as loose hardware, damage mattress support, and sharp edges caused by the previous little owner. Also, the damage could occur while been in storage, such as weaker glue joints causes by humidity.
If you can’t afford a new crib, at least avoid the following:
- Drop sides
- Slats that are more than 2 3/8 inches apart
- Protruding pieces (hardware, post, knobs)
- Chipped paint
The bottom line is, the safety of your baby should be your priority!
Does the Crib Meet the Safety Standards?
When it comes to baby products, many agencies and associations are regulating what is considered safe or not. Therefore, any crib JMPA, ASTM, or AAP certified, are among the safest you could find.
What Are the Best Materials for a Crib?
Most cribs are made of wood or metal, but some include padded side or transparent acrylic. All of those materials are fine, as long as they are assembled with the right hardware. A crib becomes dangerous if it’s loose or broken.
However, it’s the paint or the finish on the crib who could hide toxic health hazards. Therefore, I strongly suggest you get a crib that has been tested for toxic chemicals such as VOCs and polyurethane. In my opinion, the Greenguard Gold Certified label is an excellent indication if a crib has been examined for harmful chemicals.
Put on Your DIY Hat!
Cribs are sold unassembled, and therefore, you’ll need to set it up by your self. Don’t worry, you’ll get an instruction plan, but make sure you have enough time and floor space for the installation.
Also, I recommend asking your partner or a friend for help. Because most of the time, installing a crib is a 2 person job.
On the other hand, if you are not confident about your DIY skill, you could always hire a handyman to do it for you.
In both circumstances, you’ll want to inspect the crib after the installation and make sure the hardware is carefully installed, with every tight and sturdy.
From experience, I recommend assembling the new crib in your baby’s room, because once assembled, the crib might not pass in the doorway.
Buy the Crib Mattress at the Same Time!
Crib mattresses are generally sold separately. So while shopping for the crib, it’s a good idea to get the right mattress at the same time.
The mattress needs to fit snugly into the crib frame.
For your baby safety, the standard is no more than 2 inches difference around the crib and the mattress. Over 2 inches, it becomes an entrapment hazard where your baby could suffocate.
Moreover, you must know that not all crib mattresses are the exact same size, and I’ve seen up to 2 inches differences between models. While shopping for a crib, check the specs for the bed frame and match the mattress with those exact dimensions.
The color white
I don’t know why many of my friends seem intimidated by using the color white in their home. Is it because they feel like white is too dull? Still, everybody likes a day off at the spa, because it feels so calm and peaceful.
Sure white can feel cold like snow or blank because of the absence of color. However, the complex character of the color white can transform any room into a piece of heaven.

Also, here’s a little trick I’ve learned from my mom:
How do you get white furniture white again?
For stubborn smudges on white furniture, mix half of cup of baking soda with a quarter of the white vinegar. Apply the paste on the stained surface with a sponge or soft brush, and let it rest for 5 minutes. Scrub and wipe off the paste with a clean cloth. Voila!
Besides, did you know that dust is more visible on darker furniture than white? The color white as many benefits, and your white crib could definitely become the centerpiece of the nursery.
